priaprism

Priapism is a persistent erection of the penis, accompanied by pain and tenderness; resulting from a pathologic condition rather than sexual desire. It is caused by an obstruction of the venous drainage system from the corpora cavernosa. The exact etiology is unclear. Priapism is observed with increased frequency in patients with leukemia and sickle cell anemia. The stagnation of blood in the corpora leads to thrombosis and later to fibrosis, with loss of erectile function.
